Zombie basements shows underground technical installations providing the heating, air conditioning, ventilation, electricity and data storage needs of EPFL, a large polytechnic university in Lausanne, Switzerland. Made for the exhibition « Beyond High Tech Low Tech » at Archizoom EPFL in spring 2024, it unveils the inhabited space and materiality of the HVAC systems underneath our feet, for the provision of current standards of comfort. The exhibition stems from the consideration that any building designed according to the currently dominant architectural principles is ‘zombie’, non-living, as it is based on technologies and energies that will soon be exhausted or too costly for the planet. This zombie perspective invites us to reconsider the way we approach architecture and technology, in particular, by taking it out of the ghost of innovation.

La série « Zombie basements » montre les installations techniques assurant les besoins en chauffage, climatisation, ventilation, électricité et stockage de données de l’EPFL, une grande université polytechnique à Lausanne, en Suisse. Réalisée pour l'exposition « Beyond High Tech Low Tech » à Archizoom à l’EPFL au printemps 2024, elle dévoile l'espace et la matérialité des systèmes HVAC sous nos pieds, qui permettent de subvenir à nos standards de confort actuels.
L’exposition part du postulat que tout bâtiment conçu selon les principes architecturaux actuellement dominants est «zombie», non-vivant, car basé sur des technologies et énergies qui seront bientôt épuisées ou trop coûteuses pour la planète. Cette perspective zombie nous invite à reconsidérer notre manière d’appréhender l’architecture et la technologie, notamment, en les sortant du spectre de l’innovation.
